Week 6 in Review: Time To Return To Our Roots
Our Real and Spectacular Picks didn’t get their ass completely kicked in Week 6. But we didn’t make any money, either, as our long autumn of against-the-spread discontent continues.
We came into the 2013 season averaging 21.5 games above .500 ATS from 2009 to 2012 – a four-year run of incredible production. This year, we’ve already wiped out a year’s worth of victories and need to rally fast and hard to salvage something above .500 for the fifth straight season.
It won’t be easy. And it may be time to return to our very Real and Very Spectacular roots.
As long-time Cold, Hard Football Facts readers know, and CHFF Insiders in particular, our Real and Spectacular picks earned their name early on courtesy of a bit of famous “Seinfeld” sitcom history.
Some of you are probably too young to remember. But Jerry Seinfeld in a 1993 episode called “The Implant” dated a rather well-endowed woman, played by Teri Hatcher. The neurotic Seinfeld ruined the relationship because he convinced himself that they were fake.
Of course, they were not fake. As Hatcher boasted proudly as she stormed out the door, “They’re real. And they’re spectacular.”
They became a perfect metaphor for our heaving bosom of success. The lovely Ms. Hatcher became our pigskin prognosticating muse, fueling a four-year run of inspirational, money-making analysis.
Then this year, we took that inspiration away. No more Hatcher. No more inspirational orbs as our guiding headlights.
We thought the decision would make our picks appear more “professional."
But our picks have sagged badly under the weight of this decision. No Hatcher. No winning weeks. No ATS soup for you. And, in this business, nothing is more professional than victories.
Clearly, we need back the inspiration that made us the darling of pigskin prognostication. So here she is, looking as good, as real and as spectacular as ever.
You might say we've broken out the heavy, ahem, guns.
We looked back through our archives and found our first reference the the Lovely Ms. Hatcher in October 2006; we first associated her with our Real and Spectacular picks in Week 1 2009, the week that launched our epic four-year run.
Let's see how much inspiration she and we still have in the tank. Our picks always kick ass later in the year. And we're quickly approaching the mid point of the season.
Back to our sagging results so far in 2013:
Week 6 was a tough one overall for the Cold, Hard Football Facts, as even the King of Props and the Intelligence Index suffered their first losing weeks of the season. Still, the King of Props enters Week 7 a sterling 16-8 (.667) this season; while the Intelligence Index is 10-1 straight up and 9-2 (.818) ATS, with two Mental Mismatches this week.
And, consistent with the way things have unfolded for us this season, we took an obvious risk and it proved the difference between a winning week and losing week ATS. We spent all last week pointing out the folly of giving 27.5 points in an NFL game, and listed the history of poor results for mega spreads and all the things that could go wrong in the Jacksonville-Denver game.
Then, with our Real and Spectacular pick, we threw caution and history to the wind, picking Denver to win by 30, with visions of Peyton Manning laughing at the worst pass defense in football dancing through our heads.
We expect more real, spectacular and inspired picks and results in Week 7.
