'Pundits' agree: CHFF lords over all
Cold, Hard Football Facts for Mar 10, 2008
Cold, Hard Football Facts readers already knew we had the most entertaining and accurate analysis on all of Planet Pigskin.
The nation's pro football writers have provided further confirmation.
The Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) announced its 2007 writing awards Monday and our own Chief Troll, Kerry J. Byrne, won first place in the "game story" category for "Crow-six-ways from Peking Garden," his wrap-up of the epic 2006-07 AFC title game between New England and Indy. (The 2007 awards, announced here in 2008, are for stories published during the 2006-07 football season. Apparently they use the same scheduling system we did for our "32 teams in 32 days" feature.)
You can see the piece here. The entire list of award winners appears below. Other first-place winners include Don Pierson of the Chicago Tribune (columns), Chris Colston of USA Today (features), Dave Tuley of the Daily Racing Form (news) and Jason Cole and Charles Robinson of Yahoo.com (enterprise).
"It's a nice tribute to the quality of our product," Byrne said Monday night, in between games of beer-pong and Guitar Hero II at the CHFF cardboard-box world headquarters. "It's also nice to be recognized among the nation's best football writers, folks who have been covering the sport for many years and for some of the nation's largest and most established media outlets."
Beyond those words, Byrne, naturally, was unable to handle the situation with any sort of class.
"I also get a $50 check ... so I can finally afford that stomach-staple or penis-extension operation my wife has been hounding me about."
He plans to celebrate with a little squirrel casserole Tuesday night. You're all invited.
Byrne was also twice named North America's best beer writer at the Great American Beer Festival in 2000 and 2001, meaning he's now contributed nothing to society but cheesy metaphors and alliteration in two different worlds.
