Cold, Hard Football Facts for Oct 20, 2009
Teams that win the passing battle continue to ruthlessly roll over the opposition here in the 2009 season, according to Luis DeLoureiro of NFLStatAnalysis.net. In fact, passing YPA winners have now won more than 75 percent of the games played here in 2009 (68-22; .756).
NFLStatAnalysis.net has been conducting a lot of studies, independent of CHFF, that have determined that passing well is the single most important contributor to success in football. They've been feeding us the weekly results of their findings. The numbers were first reported here two weeks ago, along with some eye-opening historic trends.
Here's the success rate through Week 6 of teams that win the passing YPA battle in an individual game. We believe NFLStatAnalysis is also going to look at the 2009 season using our adjusted Passing YPA formula, that includes sacks.
Here are the results so far, using the traditional measure of passing YPA.

The lone loss for the passing YPA winner in Week 5? You guessed it, Cleveland's 6-3 "victory" over Buffalo, a game that set football back 75 years.
Most recently, in Week 6, the Panthers, Falcons and Broncos, broke the trend. Each team won despite losing the passing YPA battle.
Three of those teams that upset the YPA apple cart over the past two weeks (Browns, Falcons, Broncos) have one thing in common: they all won the turnover battle.
The Bucs are truly awful: they lost to Carolina this week despite winning the YPA battle and the turnover battle.
