Final 2005 Scoreability Index
Cold, Hard Football Facts for Jul 18, 2006
Here's how teams rated in the Scoreability Index in 2005. Its defensive counterpart, the Bendability Index, can be found here.
The Scoreability Index is obtained by dividing the number of yards generated on offense by the number of points scored, yielding Yards Per Point Scored. Teams with low YPPS numbers score more efficiently than those with high YPPS numbers.
The Scoreability Index is not purely an offensive yardstick. It is, instead, a great barometer of team success, of overall team strength and efficiency. It is a function of many team-wide factors, including general offensive strength, special teams proficiency, turnover differential and Red Zone offense.
The Scoreability Index compiles all these factors into a simple and easy-to-understand number. NFC title contender Carolina, for example, needed to churn out just 12.66 yards of offense for every point it scored in 2005. Highly inefficient New Orleans, meanwhile, needed 21.41 yards of offense for every point it scored in 2005. Clearly, Carolina was far more efficient on offense.
The Scoreability Index is a "Stat That Matters." It is generally a more accurate indicator of overall team strength than total offense or scoring offense.
