Cold, Hard Football Facts for Feb 06, 2007
These are the final Quality Standings, including postseason games, for the 2006 playoff participants.
For the second time in our three years of existence, and our three years of tracking Quality Standings, the team with the best regular-season record against Quality Opponents went on to win the Super Bowl. In both instances, the Super Bowl winner did not have the best overall record.
- The 2004 Patriots won the Super Bowl with a 7-1 regular-season mark against quality competition. They finished 10-1 vs. Quality Opponents, including their three playoff victories.
- The 2006 Colts won the Super Bowl with a 4-1 regular-season mark against quality competition. They finished 8-1 vs. Quality Opponents, including their four playoff victories.
The 2005 Steelers upset that beer cart when they won Super Bowl XL despite a 4-4 regular-season mark against Quality Opponents, which put them behind several 2005 playoff contenders. They finished an NFL-best 8-4 following their four playoff victories.
