Stat Pack Week 8 Podcast: Dissecting the Chiefs Defense
By Adam Dobrowolski
Cold, Hard Football Facts Chief Mathletics Advisor
We already know that Chiefs turned the franchise's fortunes with their strong start to the 2013 season. Now the lone unbeaten team at 7-0, the Chiefs may be putting together the best turnaround ever seen in a single season in NFL history. That comes due to an unbelievable performance by the defense.
With that mind, Stat Pack host Adam Dobrowolski dedicated much of his Week 8 podcast to breaking down the Mathletics of this start from the Chiefs defense. How much can this truly hold, or will there be regression in the near future?
To understand the true magnitude of this improvement, note that only two teams in the Live Ball Era posted a better Defensive Passer Rating improvement than the 35.04-point decrease Kansas City enjoys so far this season. The Chiefs currently own a 64.87 Defensive Passer Rating in 2013, as compared to the 99.91 from 2012. Those two were the 1981 49ers and 1982 Dolphins (albeit a strike-shortened season for the latter), and they both made the Super Bowl.
Furthermore, the Chiefs became just the fifth team in the Live Ball Era to allow 17 points or fewer in each of their first seven games. Each of the first four teams (1978 Steelers, 1991 Chiefs, 2005 Buccaneers, 2006 Patriots) eventually allowed more than 17 points in that eighth game. Therefore, Kansas City can set a new standard this Sunday when they host the struggling Cleveland Browns offense, which will by led the uninspiring Jason Campbell.
As usual, Dobrowolski also looks at the Big Board, including what powers the big trio of victories apiece by the Colts and Bengals. Meanwhile, the Week 8 subjects include a look at the best games and the potential trainwrecks for this Sunday. He gets help from CHFF-exclusive Intelligence Index.
Onto the fun, only with this week's Stat Pack!
