The Journeymen
Cold, Hard Football Facts for April 24, 2006
The Journeymen
The Journeymen are solid NFL contributors who any team wold be happy to have as a No. 2 or No. 3 receiver, but who have generally failed to live up to the high expectations of a No. 1 draft pick. Some have shown flashes of brilliance, such as Terry Glenn, who set a rookie record in 1996 with 90 catches for New England, or Green Bay's Javon Walker, who had a Pro Bowl campaign in 2004 before losing the 2005 season to injury. But these flashes have been overshadowed by years of pedestrian peformances, injuries or off-field turmoil.
Several of these players, including Houston's Andre Johnson, Detroit's Roy Williams, Buffalo's Lee Evans and Tampa's Michael Clayton (all very young players), have the potential to elevate their game to the realm of Big-Time Performers.
With 14 members, the Journeymen represent the largest group among the 45 first-round wideouts drafted since 1996. Essentially, if you've drafted a wide receiver over the past 10 years, Journeyman status is the best you can reasonably expect to get out of them. That's simply not good value for a big-money, No. 1 selection.
