Stat trends in the wake of Week 14
Cold, Hard Football Facts for December 14, 2010

A look back at some statistical trends in the wake of Week 14 NFL action. This information comes from the NFL:

MANNING ON THE MOVE:  Indianapolis quarterback PEYTON MANNING passed for 319 yards in the Colts' 30-28 win over the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night and leads the NFL with 4,028 passing yards in 2010.  If he finishes as this season's passing yardage leader, Manning would become the 11th quarterback in NFL history and the third QB since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to accomplish the feat at least three times.

Manning, who led the NFL in passing yards in 2000 and 2003, would join Pro Football Hall of Famers DAN MARINO (five) and DAN FOUTS (four) as the only players with at least three such seasons since 1970.

Manning's 300-yard performance against the Titans marked the 63rd such game of his career, tying him with Marino for the most 300-yard passing games in NFL history.

ON THE OFFENSIVENFL teams are producing yards at a historic pace this season.  With two Monday night contests still to be played in Week 14, NFL games are averaging 676.5 total yards per game (206 games).  That number includes an average of 448.1 net passing yards per contest.

If both marks maintain their current pace, each would be the highest average in a season in NFL history:

AWESOME ARIANHouston running back ARIAN FOSTER, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Texans in 2009 out of Tennessee, led the NFL with 1,230 rushing yards heading into Week 13.

Following a 101-yard rushing performance by Jacksonville's MAURICE JONES-DREW against the Raiders on Sunday, Foster now trails Jones-Drew (1,278) by 48 yards for the NFL lead heading into tonight's Baltimore-Houston game.

If Foster finishes the season as the NFL's leading rusher, he would join PRIEST HOLMES as the only undrafted players to accomplish the feat since the advent of the common draft in 1967.  Holmes led the league with 1,555 rushing yards in 2001 with Kansas City.

Foster, who also leads the league with 13 rushing touchdowns in his first 12 games, continues to move up the all-time single-season rushing leaderboards among undrafted players.

TWO IS BETTER THAN ONEWith net passing yards accumulating at a record pace, there have also been 604 touchdown passes (see above note) – the most of any season through Week 14 in NFL history.

Quarterbacks have been proficient as well as prolific.  Eleven qualifying passers currently have a touchdown-to-interception ratio of better than two-to-one (minimum 200 attempts) in 2010, which is on pace to match 2008 for the most such passers in a season.

Tonight's Monday Night Football game between the Ravens and Texans will feature two of these quarterbacks – Baltimore's JOE FLACCO (19 touchdowns, eight interceptions) and Houston's MATT SCHAUB (17 touchdowns, eight interceptions).
