Troll report: one last look at 2008
Cold, Hard Football Facts for July 30, 2009
Reader and pathetic CHFF Troll (is there any other kind?) Bryan Kilpatrick crunched a few numbers from the 2008 season and sent us the results this week. It's obvious that some teams have a lot more work ahead of them here in training camp than others.
Almost every oddsmaker out there is banking on the Patriots as pre-season Super Bowl favorites here in 2009. But they looked like anything but last year, based upon the statistics below. Apparently, the wise guys put a lot of stock in one returning player and Bill Belichick's ability to give the defense a much-needed overhaul.
The Chargers, meanwhile, looked much stronger statistically than their 8-8 record indicated and their playoff win over the 12-4 Colts does not seem as shocking based upon Quality Stats as it did based upon records.
The Titans and Giants, meanwhile, looked like they should have delivered us a powerhouse Super Bowl match-up, but both were bounced at home without a single playoff victory. The Titans lost to the Ravens, while the Giants lost to the Eagles -- each game a divisonal round pairing of statistical powerhouses.
In any case, here's Bryan:
I really enjoy your Quality Stats. I think they give a much better picture of teams and their overall strength. I thought it would be interesting to see how teams stacked up if you averaged their rankings from all of the indexes (save for the Quality Standings) and here are the results I got. I found it interesting that the playoff team that did the worst (Cardinals) was in the Super Bowl and that the Packers were the only non-playoff team in the top 10.
