NY, Boston breweries settle Super Bowl score
Cold, Hard Football Facts for February 6, 2008

(GREAT MINDS DRINK ALIKE: From left, Harpoon Brewery co-founder and Patriots fan Dan Kenary, Brooklyn Brewery founder and Giants fan Steve Hindy and Harpoon Brewery co-founder, native New Yorker and Giants fan Rich Doyle share pints of Brooklyn Lager at the Harpoon Brewery tap room Tuesday).

There’s something new on tap at Harpoon Brewery, our (proud?) sponsors for the 2007-08 playoffs: for the first time, Harpoon is serving beer from another brewery in its public tap room.

It’s all part of a Super Bowl bet our friends from Boston-based Harpoon had with our friends from New York-based Brooklyn Brewery.

Steve Hindy, the founder of Brooklyn Brewery, visited Harpoon yesterday to collect his debt (or, more appropriately drop it off, pour it and rub it in): he tapped a keg of his New York-brewed beer at Boston-based Harpoon as a symbol of his Giants' triumph over the Patriots.

Harpoon co-founder Rich Doyle was happy to pay off the debt: he’s a New York native and lifelong Giants and Yankees fan. He was at Super Bowl XLII where he was cheering (and maybe even chugging) for his beloved G-Men.

Doyle’s business partner and Harpoon co-founder Dan Kenary, meanwhile, is a native New Englander and devout Patriots and Red Sox fan.

“We don’t talk sports much,” said Kenary, who's been in business with Doyle since 1986.

Had the Patriots topped the Giants in Super Bowl XLII, the Harpoon Brew Crew would have tapped a keg of their suds in the Brooklyn Brewery tap room.

Those of you in the Boston area can sample Harpoon suds (and Brooklyn beer while the triumphant keg is available) during tap-room tastings held every Tuesday through Saturday. Visit the Harpoon Brewery website for tour & tasting times and additional information. Those of you in New York can sample Brooklyn Brewery beers at the Williamsburg neighborhood brewhouse every Saturday. Visit the Brooklyn Brewery website for tour & tasting times.
