Who wins Super Bowls? It's as easy as V-E-G-A-S
Cold, Hard Football Facts for January 30, 2008
Over the course of Super Bowl history, there has been one group of teams that have overwhelmingly turned out to be champions.
Great defensive teams?
Teams with great quarterbacks?
Teams with legendary coaches?
Nope. The one common thread shared by a whopping 75.4 percent of all Super Bowl teams comes courtesy of our friends in Las Vegas -- they were favored to win the game.
Yes, Super Bowl favorites are 31-10 (should we say XXXI-X?) all time, a remarkable stat considering a neutral field and theoretical equality between the two conferences.
And it doesn't appear to matter how much the spread is. Teams favored by less than a TD are 16-5, while teams favored by 7 or more are 15-5.
Favorites are also incredible against the spread, 24-15 with two ties (Rams-Titans in Super Bowl XXXV, Packers-Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI).
The over-under is tied: 20 for the over, 20 for the under (Super Bowl I had no over/under line).
Looking back at the games and the spreads, some just plain don't make sense.
Baltimore was only a three-point favorite over the Giants in 2000?! The friggin' 1985 Bears were only 10-point favorites over the Patsies?! The unbeaten 1972 Dolphins were only 1-point favorites over the Redskins?! (Many reports say that the Redskins were favored that day. But the information here from vegasinsider.com has Dolphins the slimmest of favorites that day.)
Oh, for a time machine.
