A 101 sim salute to Super Bowl XLII
Cold, Hard Football Facts for January 28, 2008

By Jonathan Comey
Cold, Hard Football Facts fight simulator

If you’ve never checked out WhatIfSports.com, we suggest doing so right now – but please, come back after 10 hours or so and finish this story.

The site uses a database of stats in all the different major sports to allow you to build your own teams and play them in leagues against other spouse-less sports addicts.

Right up our alley. If we can’t watch real football, simulating fake outcomes is a decent substitute.

Putting together your own teams and ilaying in leagues is a pay service, but the site offers free simulated games between any NFL team in history.

Want to see how the 1948 Chicago Cardinals might fare against the 1979 New York Jets? Go ahead! (Jets 12, Cardinals 10, Scott Dierking player of the game). The possibilities are pretty much endless.

Being inquisitive types, we decided to do 100 simulations of the Giants-Patriots Super Bowl. Then we added a 101st just for novelty, and noted each result with glee. (What If Sports did 10,000 of the things!)

Each simulation comes with full individual and team stats and even play-by-play to break down afterward.

The results of our 101 games were about what you might think based off the teams’ regular-season showings – 89 Patriot wins, 12 Giant wins.

Of those 89 Patriot wins:
  • 22 were by 1-7 points
  • 6 were by 8-13 points
  • 35 were by 14-20 points
  • 26 were by 21+ points.
The biggest Giant win was by 12 points, with 10 of the 12 wins by a TD or less.

In almost all of the New York wins, running back Brandon Jacobs was the MVP – in one of the wins, New York had 300+ yards rushing, which seems fairly unlikely.

In fact, the Giants almost always had 100 and frequently 200 yards rushing … yet only won 12 percent of the time. That’s pretty unlikely in a real game, to say the least.

Eli Manning threw at least one INT in 82 of the 101 games, and completed less than half of his passes in 62 out of the 101 games. He was only MVP once – not good foreshadowing for the Disney execs hoping to see Peyton’s little brother in Orlando.

There were several oddities that popped up among the 101 games, putting a dent in our virtual reality. Patriots fullback Heath Evans had a 69-yard run, kicker Stephen Gostkowski had more than one 57+ yard field goal, and Giants TE Kevin Boss somehow managed not one but two touchdown runs on reverses.

And the play by play feature is cool, but sim-Tom Coughlin would frequently call back-to-back plays down 14 with 4:00 left in the fourth quarter.

Improbable stuff.

Then again, who could have guessed that linemen Logan Mankins AND Jeff Saturday would both score TDs in the 2006 AFC title game between New England and Indy.

Here are all 101 results, with the MVP listed.

Tom Brady won the award in well over 50 percent of the simulations, but some underdogs slipped in there as well – none bigger than Giants’ defensive tackle Fred Robbins, who was a deserving winner in Sim No. 97 after his three sacks keyed a 17-12 win for New York.

Now that’s fake football at its best.
