Buffalo 13, N.Y. Jets 3
Statement: Widely criticized Bills quarterback J.P. Losman comes off the bench in place of injured rookie Trent Edwards to throw an 85-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter and seal win over the Jets.
Misstatement: Widely criticized Jets quarterback Chad Pennington sent to the bench in favor of second-year man Kellen Clemens with his team off to its worst start since 1-15 campaign of 1996.
Cleveland 27, St. Louis 20
Statement: Surprising Browns (4-3) twice stop Rams on fourth down, including a 4th-and-1 late in the game with St. Louis driving for potential game-tying score.
Misstatement: Most Miserable Show on Turf (0-8) can’t get out of its own way, as evidenced by fourth-down failures and league-worst 12.4 PPG. RB Steven Jackson, who in August boasted of a 2,500-yard season, needs just 2,210 yards over final eight games to reach his goal.
Detroit 16, Chicago 7
Statement: Jon Kitna throws for 268 yards as Lions (5-2) sweep season series against Bears and march off to their best start since 2000.
Misstatement: Bring back Rex! Brian Griese throws four picks in embarrassing home loss for Bears, who limp off to their worst start (3-5) since 2004.
Indy 31, Carolina 7
Statement: Colts smoke Panthers in Carolina, for their third road win this year against a
Quality Team. Indy quietly averages 32.0 PPG, just a shade behind franchise record 32.6 PPG set by 2004 Colts.
Misstatement: Panthers smoked in Carolina for their third home loss of the year. All four Panthers victories have come on the road.
Jacksonville 24, Tampa Bay 23
Statement: Jags QB Quinn Gray throws an 8-yard game-winning TD in the fourth quarter to lead Jags to victory in his first NFL start.
Misstatement: Bucs QB Jeff Garcia throws his first three INTs of the season to hijack Tampa offense and lose in his 100th NFL start.
New England 52, Washington 7
Statement: New England's future Hall of Fame coach Bill Belichick enjoys the biggest blowout of his coaching career. Previous best was a 44-7 win over Jets in 2002. New England (41.4 PPG) on pace to
shatter NFL scoring record set by 1950 Rams (38.8 PPG).
Misstatement: Washington's Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs suffers biggest blowout of either one of his go-rounds with Redskins. Previous worsts were 36-0 loss to Giants in 2005; and 45-10 defeat to mighty 1985 Bears.
N.Y. Giants 13, Miami 10
Statement: Limeys savor flavor of first ever regular-season NFL game overseas.
Misstatement: Limeys forced to endure sloppy, watered-down version of a regular-tasting NFL game. Winning QB Eli Manning threw for 59 yards.
New Orleans 31, San Francisco 10
Statement: After slow start, Saints (3-4) have ripped off three straight wins, averaging 27.0 PPG in the victories.
Misstatement: After fast start, 49er (2-5) have lost five straight and can’t get out of their own way. San Francisco ranks 31st with 12.6 PPG and 32nd with 220.4 YPG.
Philadelphia 23, Minnesota 16
Statement: Vikings coach Brad Childress admits rumors of Donovan McNabb’s demise are “over-exaggerated” following 333-yard passing performance by Philly QB.
Misstatement: Rumors of demise of Minnesota’s QB situation cannot be over-exaggerated. No. 1 starter Tarvaris Jackson missed game with injury. No. 2 QB Kelly Holcomb completes 7 of 16 for 88 yards before leaving with injury. No. 3 QB Brooks Bollinger completes 7 of 10 for 94 yards. No. 4 QB Fran Tarkenton may see action this Sunday.
Pittsburgh 24, Cincinnati 13
Statement: Steelers send aggressive message in first half with long passes and a reverse attempt in first two drives, including 21-yard TD toss to Hines Ward.
Misstatement: Timid Tiger Marvin Lewis sends a passive message in first half by foregoing 4th-and-inches attempt to kick field goal (while trailing by 11) in front of disappointed record Cincy crowd of 66,188.
San Diego 35, Houston 10
Statement: Chargers ride five turnovers and two TDs by CB Antonio Cromartie into third straight convincing victory.
Misstatement: Chargers lost first down battle to Houston 22-11, yardage battle 367-237, and TOP battle 36:32-23:28. San Diego has yet to beat a team with a winning record, and has been outscored 33.0 to 18.0 in those three games against
Quality Teams.
Tennessee 13, Oakland 9
Statement: Titans RB LenDale White leads Titans to victory with career-high 133 rushing yards.
Mistatement: Titans QB Vince Young rides White to victory with career-low 42 passing yards. Young is 4-1 as a starter in games in which he’s passed for fewer than 100 yards.
