Moss, Owens top TD-producing WRs in modern NFL history
Cold, Hard Football Facts for October 12, 2007
You already know that Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, the high-profile, pass-catching combatants in Sunday's New England-Dallas megagame, are talented players.
You might not know that they're two of the three most prolific scoring machines in the history of the NFL, and certainly the most productive of the modern era.
Updating a previous list, we calculated the average TDs per game of every receiver in NFL history with at least 60 TD catches.
Naturally, Don Hutson, the most dominant receiver ever (and a member of the Cold, Hard Football Facts All-Time 11), chimes in at No. 1, and by a wide margin. He averaged better than 0.8 TDs per game over the course of his 116-game career.
But right behind him are Moss at No. 2 and Owens at No. 3. Another active phenom rounds out the Top 4, Indy's Marvin Harrison.
Barring some sort of miracle year by Moss, who already has 7 TD receptions this year, Hutston's place atop the leaderboard is pretty secure. But that doesn't change the fact that no receivers over the last 62 years (Hutson retired in 1945) have been better at scoring TDs than Moss, Owens and Harrison.
