Cold, Hard Football Facts.com takes it weekly, utterly emotionless and often quite ironic look at NFL statements and their equal and opposite misstatements.
Arizona 34, St. Louis 31
Statement: Great day for Kurt Warner. Productive Cardinals QB comes off the bench to run for one TD and throw two others, including game-winner with 3:15 to play, against his old team.
Misstatement: Terrible career for Matt Leinart. Unproductive Cardinals QB goes out with a broken collarbone, and perhaps will stop whining about playing time or being drafted No. 10, a day after his old team suffers humiliating upset.
Baltimore 9, San Francisco 7
Statement: The Ravens D shows shades of its old self by holding 49ers to seven points, six first downs and 163 total yards.
Misstatement: The 49ers O shows shades of 1976 Buccaneers. It ranks 31st in scoring (12.6 PPG) and dead last in almost everything else: passing (117.2 YPG), total offense (203.2 YPG), average gain per play (3.8 yards), third-down conversions (24.2 percent) and time of possession (25:38 per game). Ghost of John McKay lobbies for execution of 49ers offense.
Carolina 16, New Orleans 13
Statement: Carolina climbs to 3-2 when kicker John Kasay nails 53-yard game-winner as time expires.
Misstatement: New Orleans falls to 0-4 when kicker Olindo Mare misses 54-yarder with 2:12 left in regulation. He also had a 20-yard chip shot blocked earlier in the game.
Chicago 27, Green Bay 20
Statement: Vintage 1996 version of Brett Favre shreds Chicago defense in first half with 19 of 22 passing for 243 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 127.8 passer rating.
Misstatement: Vintage 2005 version of Brett Favre shredded by Chicago defense in second half with 10 of 18 passing for 79 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT, 27.1 passer rating.
Houston 22, Miami 19
Statement: Houston kicker Kris Brown ties NFL record with three figgies of 50 yards or more, including 57-yard game-winner at the end of regulation.
Misstatement: Dolphins fall to 0-5 and remain on course to become the second perfect team in franchise history.
Indianapolis 33, Tampa Bay 14
Statement: Playing without offensive weapons Marvin Harrison and Joseph Addai, wounded Colts hang 33 on what was the league’s No. 1 scoring defense.
Misstatement: Playing without offensive weapons Cadillac Williams and Michael Pittman (in-game injury), wounded Bucs generate 17 yards rushing on what was one the league’s worst run defenses.
Jacksonville 17, Kansas City 7
Statement: Jaguars hold Chiefs scoreless until the final play of the game and now boast the NFL’s No. 2 scoring defense (10.2 PPG).
Misstatement: Herm Edwards’ record-setting demolition of the KC offense nears completion. Chiefs rank No. 28 in total offense, No. 30 in scoring offense and No. 32 in rush offense. In 2005, the year before Edwards took over, the Chiefs ranked No. 1 in total offense, No. 6 in scoring offense and No. 4 in rushing offense.
New England 34, Cleveland 17
Statement: New England QB Tom Brady storms off the field angrily after worst performance of the year: 22 of 38, 265 yards, 7.0 YPA, 3 TD, 0 INT, 105.7 passer rating.
Misstatement: Cleveland QB Derek Anderson tip-toes off the field gingerly after worst performance of the year: 22 of 43, 287 yards, 6.7 YPA, 2 TD, 3 INT, 59.0 rating.
N.Y. Giants 35, N.Y. Jets 24
Statement: Giants romp for 188 yards on 39 carries (4.8 YPA) to win Battle of the Swamplands and improve to 3-2.
Misstatement: Jets stumble-and-bumble for 55 yards on 22 attempts (2.2 YPA) to lose road game at home and fall to 1-4.
Pittsburgh 21, Seattle 0
Statement: Steelers rebound from worst defensive performance of the year with best defensive performance of the year, and now lead the NFL in scoring defense (9.4 PPG).
Misstatement: In Seattle’s Super Bowl season of 2005, Shaun Alexander rushed for 1,880 yards, 5.1 YPA and a then-record 27 TDs. Since then, he’s gained 1,274 yards, 3.6 YPA and 9 TDs.
San Diego 41, Denver 3
Statement: Chargers hand Broncos their worst home loss in 41 years.
Misstatement: Denver has surrendered 124 points in its last three games against San Diego (41.3 PPG), all losses.
Tennessee 20, Atlanta 13
Statement: The Titans defense holds Atlanta to 198 total yards and an average of 3.2 yards per play.
Misstatement: Vince Young was dreadful: 20 of 33 for 157 yards, 0 TD and 3 INT. But not as dreadful as Atlanta’s combo of Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich: 18 of 39 for 115 yards, 0 TD and 2 INT.
Washington 34, Detroit 3
Statement: Redskins third-year QB Jason Campbell had a career day, with personal bests in completions (23), completion percentage (79.3%), yards (248), TDs (2) and passer rating (125.3).
Misstatement: The Lions have a winning record, but a losing defense: 29th in pass defense (263.6 YPG), 29th in total defense (378.6 YPG) and 31st in scoring (31.0 PPG).
