NFL logo gets facelift. Is American flag next?
Cold, Hard Football Facts for September 1, 2007
Wow.
The NFL is a new place these days, tough on crime, big in Japan ... and soon, with a strong, emboldened logo to take the league deep into this brave new millennium.
Yes, the NFL shield, Gridiron Old Glory herself, will look different in 2008, as USA Today reports.
And there it is.
How do we feel about such a thing?
There is something of a vibe of "why mess with a good thing?" The NFL shield is already the most widely recognized symbol in North American sports. Oh, sure, we realize they even update the American flag from time to time. But usually when something important happens, like Texas or California joins the Union, not because some marketing wag thinks it will "pop" on high-def TV.
But, to the extent that we can feel feelings, it's not so bad. A few less stars here, a few straighter lines there – even in our normal drunken stupor, we'd be able to pick it out of a police lineup.
Now if they can do something about the Bengals' uniforms ...
